PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-grade backrest of a chair in which a member for applying force to an tension material is suitably concealed. SOLUTION: The backrest comprises the tension material 1 constituting a support surface for supporting the body of a sitting person, a support body 2 for receiving the load of the sitting person, and a hanging frame 3 which projects to the front from the support body 2, across which the tension material 1 is hung, and which forms a space area where members 41 and 42 for applying force to the tension material 1 can be disposed, between the tension material 1 and the support body 2a.
