A resin prepared by reacting the ingredients of an alkyd resin together with a dibasic aliphatic acid ester of a dihydric alcohol as such or prepared in situ may be dissolved in solvents such as acetone, monoethyl ether of glycol, ethyl lactate or dibutyl phthalate to give a lacquer, or it may be used as the resin ingredient in cellulose ester lacquers. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 299,424, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], 316,319, and 317,225, [both in Class 95, Paints &c.].ALSO:Ester condensation products.--Alkyd resins are made more flexible by preparing them in the presence of a dibasic aliphatic acid ester of a dihydric alcohol, such as glycol succinate, as such or made in situ. Other dibasic acids such as adipic, sebasic, maleic and malic and other dihydric alcohols such as propylene, diethylene or tetramethylene glycols may be used. A cellulose ester may also be incorporated. The product or the mixture thereof with cellulose ester may be used for making articles such as brush handles or combs or it may be dissolved in solvents such as acetone, glycol monoethylether, ethyl lactate, or dibutyl phthlate, to give a lacquer. The resinous product may be used in cellulose ester lacquers. In examples glycol, succinic acid, glycerol and phthalic acid are reacted together; other polybasic acids than phthalic acid or its anhydride may be used and polyhydric alcohols having three or more hydroxyl groups in the molecule may be used in place of glycerine.
