A secondary battery comprising microcapsules in which a safety-ensuring material is encapsulated is provided to inhibit a rapid increase in the temperature of the battery under an abnormal operating condition while not adversely affecting the dimension and quality of the battery. A secondary battery comprises an electrode assembly(20) including a cathode, an anode and a separator interposed therebetween, and a casing for housing the electrode assembly, wherein microcapsules(600) in which a safety-ensuring material is encapsulated are applied to a portion(140) having no direct effect on the operation of the battery, and the portion can easily generate short caused by heat accumulation and internal/external pressure upon an abnormal condition. The safety-ensuring material includes a fire-extinguishing agent or heat-absorbing material.
