PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the efficiency of a hand-writing search as to a navigation device allowing hand-writing input. SOLUTION: In this navigation device, characters resembling a hand-written character inputted from a touch panel are selected as character candidates to search for a searching object by using the character candidates. Further, this navigation device is equipped with a local area mode for limiting a search area to the periphery of a present position and a wide area mode for taking a wide area as a search area. First, a search is performed in the local area mode. In cases where a searching object is uselessly searched for in that, a search is performed in the wide area mode. In cases where a plurality of character candidates are selected from hand-written characters, the performance of a search for the character candidates causes searching objects not intended by a user to be searched for or search time to be lengthened.
