PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a block copolymer comprising at least two blocks composed of aromatic units differed in respective basic structures, and having a high molecular weight together with a narrow chain length distribution and a narrow molecular weight distribution. SOLUTION: The method for producing the block copolymer is carried out by sequentially reacting two or more aromatic compounds selected from aromatic compounds expressed by formula (V) where each the aromatic compounds has different Ar, in the presence of a nickel complex containing a compound expressed by formula (I) etc., forming blocks composed of each of the aromatic compounds. Where the two or more aromatic compounds react in the descending order of aromatic ring charge parameters. In the formulae, Ar is a (2+k) valent organic group containing an aromatic ring; R is a hydrocarbyl group etc.; k is an integer of ≥0; X is a halogen atom etc.; Y is an oxygen atom etc.; n is 0 or 1; and M is -B(OQ<SP>1</SP>)<SB>2</SB>etc. (Q<SP>1</SP>is a hydrocarbyl group etc.); R<SP>1</SP>is a hydrocarbyl group and R<SP>2</SP>is a hydrocarbylene group.
