PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pest controlling agent that is effective against the insect pests hard to be controlled, for example, indoor ticks, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, soil Nematoda or the like by including a specific ethylene glycol ester derivative as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: The objective drug is obtained by including an ethylene glycol ester derivative (e.g. n-hexyloxyethyl acetate) of formula I [R1 is a 1-10C alkyl; R2 is a 1-10C alkyl, a 1-10C haloalkyl, a halogen or a (substituted) phenyl; n is 1-4] as an active ingredient. The compound of formula I can be produced, for example, by the method reacting (A) a compound of formula II with (B) 0.5-2 moles of a compound of formula III based on 1 mole of the component A in the presence of (C) an acid catalyst (e.g. sulfuric acid), when necessary, in (D) a solvent (e.g. hexane) at a temperature from room temperature to the boiling point of the component D, preferably at 5-110 deg.C, for 0.5-2 hours, or the like.
