1. A probiotic composition for inducing or supporting weight loss, or preventing or reducing weight gain in a subject, the probiotic composition comprising:
probiotic bacteria that, when introduced into a gastrointestinal tract of a subject, increases the populations of beneficial bacterial species in the gastrointestinal tract of the subject, wherein:
the probiotic bacteria consists of bacteria selected from the genus Bacteroides and has a count of the genus Bacteroides bacteria of at least 1,000,000 colony forming units per gram, based upon the total weight of the composition; and at least one pharmaceutically acceptable excipient that contains the probiotic bacteria in a pharmaceutically effective amount and enables the contained probiotic bacteria to be protected and preserved until delivery of the contained probiotic bacteria into the gastrointestinal tract of the subject to establish and propagate the genus Bacteroides bacteria and thereby to increase the populations of beneficial bacterial species in the gastrointestinal tract to induce or support weight loss, or prevent or reduce weight gain in the subject. |
