An electrical connector assembly has a first and a second electrical conn ector. Each electrical connector includes a housing having electrical contac ts therein wherein each contact of the first electrical connector mates or c onnects with a corresponding contact of the second electrical connector. A k eying arrangement has keying surfaces for inhibiting the mating except for m ating a first electrical connector to a designated second electrical connect or. Another keying arrangement is provided by two pairs of electrical contac t housings fitted within interior cavities of the first and second electrica l connectors. Each electrical contact housing includes a key sized to slip f it into an opposing opening of an electrical contact housing fitted within a n interior cavity of either the first or second electrical connector. Each k ey is arranged so that the first and second electrical connector housings wi ll mate only when the four keys are in mating alignment with their respectiv e opening.
