PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of optimizing contrast and brightness by adjusting light quantity according to the operating environment of the projector and completely restraining the lowering of efficiency of using light even when the contrast is improved. SOLUTION: The projector 1000 is equipped with: an illuminator 100 having a light source device 110, a first lens array 120, a second lens array 130 and a superposition lens 150; liquid crystal devices 400R, 400G and 400B; and a projection optical system 600, and is further equipped with: a mode selection device 700 selecting which mode the projector is operated in, a brightness priority mode and a contrast priority mode; and a reflection type light quantity adjustment device 160 adjusting the passing light quantity of illuminating luminous flux at a periphery part out of the illuminating luminous flux advancing toward the first lens array 120 according to the mode selected by the mode selection device 700.
