An article of footwear, comprising; a sole, the sole comprising a bottom surface for contacting the ground and a top surface, the sole including a heel region, a forefoot region and a midfoot region, wherein the sole defines a recess in the midfoot region of the sole; a motion monitor housing comprising a hard plastic and having a first housing surface, wherein the first housing surface is disposed substantially parallel to the top surface of the sole; and a motion monitor disposed in the motion monitor housing, the motion monitor comprising an accelerometer, a memory, a personal area network transceiver, and a battery, wherein the accelerometer is configured to measure acceleration in more than one axis, wherein the accelerometer is further configured to provide a stream of acceleration data that corresponds to the motion of a user's foot when the user engages in a locomotion activity while wearing the article of footwear, wherein the motion monitor is configured to filter the stream of acceleration data, and wherein the memory is configured to store a program used to generate performance data from the filtered acceleration data, and wherein the motion monitor is configured to store data collected during the locomotion activity in the memory, and to transmit the stored data to a mobile phone via the personal area network transceiver only after the locomotion activity is completed in response to first receiving a message from the mobile phone via the personal area network transceiver that the phone is ready to receive the performance data, and wherein the motion monitor is further configured operate in first state at a relatively lower power consumption level and a second state at a relatively higher power consumption level.
