A transom-mounted outboard motor for a boat has an overhanging clamp that when lowered supports a motor unit in the water. The motor diffuser pod is located at the center of an essentially tubular cowl from which it is separated by struts. The water inlet to the cowl and propeller has a protective grid. The rear end of the cowling incorporates a thrust deflector plate giving directional control.
