A non-prismatically shaped electrochemical cell B is manufactured using an elongate substantially planar electrode strip A having an anode on one of its major surfaces, a cathode on the other of its major surfaces, and a separator between the anode and the cathode. The electrode strip A tapers in its plane along the length of the strip, and is rolled up along its length from its wider end to its narrower end. This results in a non-prismatic shape for the resulting rolled coil. The cell B preferably comprises a shell substantially corresponding to the shape of the coil, which may be provided with a controller C in its central region. The controller C may be inserted after removal of a mandrel around which the strip is rolled, or the strip may be directly rolled around the controller. The shell B is preferably ellipsoid. The controller C may be connected to the anode and the cathode of the electrode strip A, and also to contact points (D, figure 6) provided on the external face of the shell B. The tapered electrode strip A may be in the form of a trapezoid (1, 4; figure 3), which may have a rectangular section at its wider end (2, figure 3), or may comprise a pair of convex curved edges joining the wider end and narrower end (3, figure 3). |
