TURBOCHARGER WITH REDUCED THERMAL INERTIA AND METHOD OF PRODUCING THE SAME

The present application provides a turbine housing unit for a turbocharger of an internal combustion engine having a reduced thermal inertia, and a method of producing the same. The turbine housing unit has an internal passage comprising an inlet (10), an outlet (14) and a volute (12) for receiving a turbine wheel and is produced by the following steps: preparing a plurality of metallic turbine housing pieces (2, 4), each having an inner wall surface that defines a part of the internal passage; applying a thermal insulating layer (8) on the inner wall surfaces; and joining the turbine housing pieces (2, 4) at respective parting lines (6) after applying the thermal insulating layer (8) to obtain an integral turbine housing unit.
