<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mode converter that converts a higher order mode to a base mode without removing the higher order mode in optical fiber transmission in short wavelength band. <P>SOLUTION: A fiber taper 13 is produced in order that, with an optical fiber 12 and the fiber taper 13 joined, the terminal of a taper part 14 is formed where the propagation constant of the base mode beam 17 in the fiber taper 13 is equal to that of a higher order mode beam 16 in the optical fiber 12. When the taper part 14 and a standard fiber part 15 are joined at this terminal, the higher order mode beam 16 in the fiber is efficiently coupled with the base mode beam 15 in the taper with the equal propagation constant. If the fiber taper 13 is prepared with heat insulation conditions maintained, the base mode beam 17 in the taper part 14 is guided to the base mode of the fiber part 15 without converting mode, and only the higher order mode beam 16 is converted to the mode beam 17. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT</p> |
