PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus that reduces power consumption, cools an image pickup device as much as possible, and thereby to prevent or to suppress deterioration in image quality. SOLUTION: When a shutter button is half-pressed at time T1, an image pickup device is positioned at a cooling position, and then the intermittent drive of a cooling unit is started. This state continues during the half-pressed period. When the shutter button is entirely pressed at time T2, an image pickup device drive mechanism is allowed to perform drive for correcting camera shake, and the intermittent drive of the cooling unit is allowed to continue. When exposure operation for generating a pixel signal for recording by the image pickup device is started at time T3, and the output operation of the pixel signal is started at time T5, the intermittent drive and entire one of the cooling unit are performed until the time T5, respectively. The drive for correcting the camera shake is stopped at time T5 for moving the image pickup device to a cooling position, the actuation of the cooling unit is stopped when the output operation of the pixel signal is completed at time T6, and the image pickup device is positioned at a position except the cooling position.
