<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To capture excellent image data by smoothly feeding a document during sheet-through image reading in an image reader. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image reader 12 includes: an upstream roller for feeding a document to a reading position where the document is read while being fed; a downstream roller for ejecting the document from the reading position; document glass provided at the reading position; a feeding guide freely turnably supported by a shaft member positioned at a downstream side of the reading position for guiding the document fed from the upstream roller through a gap with the document glass to the downstream roller; and an energizing member for energizing a downstream side of the feeding guide to a side of the document glass. Until the document is fed through the reading position to the downstream roller, a state is maintained where the gap between the feeding guide and the document glass near the reading position is made the narrowest and proper. At the same time, the downstream side of the feeding guide is turned in a direction opposite to an energizing direction as the downstream roller feeds the document.
