Provided is an organic electroluminescent element which has high efficiency and high operational stability, while being operated at low voltage. An organic electroluminescent element which comprises a light emitting layer between a positive electrode and a negative electrode facing each other, and wherein: the light emitting layer contains two host materials and a light emitting dopant; and among the two host materials, a first host material (H1) is an indolocarbazole compound having one or two indolocarbazole rings, and a second host material (H2) is a host material that is selected from among carbazole compounds represented by general formula (3) and having a structure wherein two carbazole rings are bonded by a six-membered aromatic ring.
