PURPOSE: A overlay recording method in a digital recorder is provided to perform a file close operation for a repeatedly recorded new program, and to generate/record a start address and an end address of the program, then to update a start address and an end address of a partially deleted program, thereby normally managing/reproducing the program. CONSTITUTION: A microcomputer sets a current recording mode to a overlay recording mode(S10), and selects an optional program to be deleted(S11). The microcomputer reads navigation information corresponding to the deleted program, and temporarily stores a start address and an end address of the program(S12,S13). The microcomputer repeatedly records new data from the start address(S14). If the overlay recording process is completed(S15), the microcomputer performs a file close operation for the program(S15). The microcomputer updates the start address of the program into an address right before an end address of other program(S16).
