A wave energy absorber comprising an expandable shell for easy storage transportation and deployment. The device has a central column with a first end which, when the device is deployed is positioned at or above the surface of the wave medium and a second end positioned at a depth below the surface as well as an expandable shell connected to the first end and to a shell connector. Expansion of the shell is caused firstly by fluid motion in the wave medium which causes a flow of fluid into the expandable shell and secondly by waves incident on the outer surface of the expandable shell which causes localised movement of the expandable shell which in conjunction with the fluid entering via inlet valves acts tt pump fluid into the expandable shell. In another embodiment of the present invention, the shell is expanded under tension using the relative buoyancy between the top of the column/riser and a moveable member which can move up and down the column/riser. |
