Provided is a robot such that the operations of the robot during a conversation between a user and the robot can be controlled by directly recognizing the emotions etc. of the user through exchange of messages. The robot is capable of communicating with a portable terminal of the user and is provided with: a storage unit in which multiple applications for controlling the operations of the robot are stored in advance; a reception unit for receiving from the portable terminal a transmitted message with the intent of engaging in a conversation with the robot; a selection unit for selecting one application from among the multiple applications on the basis of instruction information included in the message; and a control unit for controlling mechanisms for causing the robot to operate on the basis of the selected application. |
