A sewing machine is provided to lengthen an end of an upper thread cut by an upper thread-cutting unit, thereby neatly and promptly finishing the end of the upper thread after cutting the upper thread. A sewing needle(9) is installed at a needle pole(8). An upper thread-cutting unit(35) is installed above a needle plate(5). The upper thread-cutting unit has an upper thread operation blade(40) for cutting an upper thread(14), which is extended from cloth to a hole of the sewing needle. An upper moving unit(36) reciprocates the upper thread operation blade between an upper thread catch position, where the upper thread is caught below the sewing needle, and an upper thread cut position, which is distanced from the upper thread catch position at a predetermined interval. An upper thread-keeping unit(31) keeps an end of the upper thread cut by the upper thread-cutting unit when the upper moving unit reciprocates the upper thread operation blade. Herein, the predetermined interval is set to be longer than a distance between the hole of the sewing needle and the needle plate.
