A liquid applicator (10) for applying a desired liquid to a surface includes a closed vial (14) formed of a fractural material containing the desired liquid, a body having a pocket (12) with an open side and a shape adapted to receive the vial ( 14), a porous element (16) sealed to the body, and closing off the open side of the p ocket (12) so that liquid flows through the element (16) when the vial (14) is fractur ed. The body has a flange protruding from the pocket (12) along the open side thereo f and a wing-like gripping member (24, 26) projects from the flange. The gripping member (24, 26) is spaced from the pocket (12) and supported for pivoting moveme nt relative to the pocket (12) by the flange. The body also has structure (36, 38) for fracturing the vial (14), the structure (36, 38) being interposed between the po cket (12) and gripping member (24, 26). Upon pivoting of the gripping member (24, 26), the structure (36, 38) flexes the pocket (12) inwardly to exert a fracturin g force against the vial (14) when the member (24, 26) is pivoted towards the pocket (12 ).
