A method and apparatus for detecting a link is provided, which relates to the field of the network communication. The method comprises: sending a loopback cell for requesting the loopback with the identification information; after receiving a loopback cell for requesting the loopback, judging whether the received loopback cell for requesting the loopback is identical to the loopback cell for requesting the loopback with the identification information; if so, affirming the link is normal at the case that the loopback cell for responding the loopback is received within the set time and reporting an alarm upward if the loopback cell for responding the loopback is not received within the set time. The method and apparatus can detect the actual situation of the ATM link exactly at the case of presenting the physical loopback for several times or presenting the abnormal loopback.
