Unsaturated alcohols are obtained by heating polyhydric alcohols with aluminium hydroxide. The polyhydric alcohol employed preferably contains a secondary alcohol group, the elimination of water usually occuring at this point. In an example 1,12 octadecanediol (obtained by reduction of 12-oxystearic acid) is heated with aluminium hydroxide in absence of air to 220--250 DEG C. and finally to 300 DEG C. In a similar manner, dihydroxyacids may be converted into unsaturated hydroxy-acids. |
