The iron has a heatable ironing base (10), and a water tank (11) provided with a tank wall (12). An air-permeable, water-impermeable membrane (14) is arranged in a geodetically overlying region of the water tank in an operation condition, and is made from a microfiber. A steam chamber (13) is connected to the water tank, and the tank wall is made of the membrane. The tank wall includes a recess that is sealed by the membrane, which is arranged at a geodetic high position over an air chamber (16) of the water tank.
