PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the seating speed of a valve in seating to a prescribed speed or less in a solenoid driven intake and exhaust valve device for attracting the valve by electromagnetic force. SOLUTION: The control of the seating speed includes keeping the spring- mass system energy of a solenoid driven intake and exhaust valve constant. An external force such as pressure by combustion is applied to the spring-mass system. This external force is estimated on the basis of the deviationΔX between an actual valve position Xm and an estimated valve position Xp. Since the actual valve position is matched to the estimated valve position Xp when the estimation of the external force is precise, the speed can be estimated on the basis of the estimated valve position Xp. Since a current-carrying pattern for controlling the seating speed is changed on the basis of the estimated speed, a precise seating speed control can be executed.
