PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary encoder capable of diagnosing deterioration and an abnormal condition of a light emitting element in the encoder, without taking out a servo motor and the encoder from equipment. SOLUTION: This rotary encoder is constituted of the first load resistor 31 and the light emitting element 32 connected to an operation voltage source, and the second load resistor 33 and the first controller 34, and the third load resistor 35 and the second controller 36, which are connected in parallel to the light emitting element 32; switching operations for the first controller 34 and the second controller 36 are made variable by a serial data; a current supplied to the light emitting element 32 is made variable to confirm an operation of the encoder; and the propriety of using continuously the light emitting element 32 is determined in advance.
