PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butyric acid in high efficiency. SOLUTION: The process for producing 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butyric acid or its ester comprises the reaction of 4-(methylthio)-2-oxo-1-butanol with oxygen and water or a primary alcohol in the presence of a copper compound. The 4-(methylthio)-2-oxo-1-butanol to be used in the production process is easily producible by reacting 3-methylthiopropionaldehyde with formaldehyde in the presence of a thiazolium salt and a base.
