PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel ionic liquid that has a lower limit critical dissolution temperature in water and exhibits phase separation behavior. SOLUTION: The ionic liquid comprises a quaternary salt compound represented by general formula (1) [wherein A+is a quaternary cation containing a nitrogen atom or a phosphorus atom; and the anionic part is a hydrophobic anion bearing a carboxy group (wherein Y is a lower alkyl group)].
