Coated component and method of manufacturing said coating

Thermal barrier coating (TBC) of the component substrate, has a surface (10) including curved expansion gaps (5). A novel feature is complete enclosure of surface regions (7) by these expansion gaps. The gaps and their intersections, form a net-like structure. The gaps surround round- and/or oval surface regions. The circles and/or ovals have the same radii and are uniformly distributed over the surface. Coating porosity is 5 - 20 vol%. The coating is ceramic, with a bonding layer interposed between itself and the metallic substrate. The component is a turbine hub component. It is made by first positioning a wire or cord structure, i.e. a net template or mesh, with clearance from the surface. Once the coating has been applied, it is removed. A thermal spraying process is used for application. Alternatively, vapor-deposition takes place from the gas phase. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method of manufacture.
