The invention relates to method for detecting a gap (L) of a timing wheel (12), which is connected to rotate with a rotating shaft, in particular with a rotating shaft of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, wherein the timing wheel (12) has marks (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5) and the gap (L) between two adjacent marks (M3, M4), wherein the timing wheel (12) is scanned, and the marks (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5) are detected, wherein time intervals (Tn-3, Tn-2, Tn-1, Tn) are determined between two detected adjacent marks (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5), wherein from each of the determined time intervals (Tn-3, Tn-2, Tn-1, Tn) a frequency value is respectively determined, which depends on a reciprocal value of the determined time interval (Tn-3, Tn-2, Tn-1, Tn), wherein the determined frequency values are evaluated according to a predefined criterion and the gap (L) of the timing wheel (12) is identified therefrom. |
