A method and an apparatus for determining a traveling direction of a navigation system are provided to enable a driver to drive safely by displaying the next direction on the next intersection. An apparatus for determining a traveling direction of a navigation system includes an input unit(120), a traveling direction processor(110), and an output unit(130). The input unit receives intersection information having more than three branches, link information, position information on the respective links, latitude and longitude information on the links, a road type, and the number of lanes. When the road type and the lane number of the next and current roads are matched, the traveling direction processor determines a straight traveling direction. When the road type and the lane number of the next and current roads are not matched, the traveling direction processor determines the next direction, such as left/right turns and the straight traveling direction, according to a Convex hull algorithm. The output unit displays the determined traveling direction toward the road, which is connected to the current link, on a screen.
