PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provided a method capable of obtaining a metallic iron of high purity in a high yield by efficiently reducing iron oxide to metallic iron at the time of producing metallic iron by heating and reducing iron oxide such as iron ore or the like together with a carbonaceous reducing agent such as a carbon material and moreover, easily separating slug forming components mixed as gangue mineral components in an iron oxide source from metallic iron as slug, and to provide a device therefor. SOLUTION: In the method for producing material iron by heating a raw material mixture contg. iron oxide, an iron oxide-contg. material or the partially reduced material thereof and a carbonaceous reducing agent and reducing iron oxide, as for the compsn. of slug forming components in the raw material mixture, in such a manner that the m.p. of slug upon the end of the reduction reaches a temp. equal to or above the m.p. of the produced metallic iron, the compsn. of the raw material is controlled, thereby, the reduction of iron oxide is efficiently progressed, and moreover, the separation of the produced metallic iron is made easy.
