PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photodetector for an encoder which can satisfactorily remove noise-like carriers and which can be miniaturized. SOLUTION: The photodetector 3 is constituted of a one-dimensional photodetector array 4, consisting of a plurality of photodetector elements for detecting a plurality of phase parts in a light and dark pattern, and is constituted so that the phase part, detected by the photodetector elements 4a disposed at one end of the photodetector array 4 and the phase part, detected by the photodetector elements 4d disposed at the other end of the photodetector array, are mutually out of phase by 180 degrees.
