Successive courses of bricks are aligned using pegs, plates or I-section distance pieces (13) that mate with precisely-positioned cavities or slots in the bricks. When the distance piece is laid on the previous course (14), it forms a temporary alignment aid; it becomes a permanent part of the load-bearing structure once the following course is laid. Grouting (15) is applied.
