PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable resistor for easily allowing a whole device to be thinner along the lateral direction of a resistance pattern. SOLUTION: An operation member 7 is elastically energized by a torsion coil spring 9 in a state where a spindle 17 is fitted to a bearing recess 7b, and rotatably supported by a housing 1. A slider 8 is slidably movably stored inside the housing 1. The bent elastic pieces 11a, 11b of a sliding element 11 held by the slider 8 are elastically brought into contact with a resistance pattern 5 and a power collection pattern 6 which are formed by printing on the pattern forming surface 2f of the housing 1. Both the patterns 5, 6 are linearly arranged as substantially the same size belt-like patterns. The driving projection 7f of the operation member 7 is slidably engaged with the engagement recess 8a of the slider 8. When the operation member 7 is operated by rotation, the slider 8 is moved by sliding, so as to change the contact position of the sliding element 11 with respect to the resistance pattern 5.
