This invention is an intervertebral disk prosthesis for implantation between two adjacent vertebrae, which is more easily implanting intermediate the adjacent vertebrae, particularly from a posterior surgical approach due to its two-piece construction. The intervertebral disk prosthesis consists of first (30) and second (50) intervertebral disk segments which, when connected together by a bolt (70), form a substantially elliptical configuration sized to fit between the end plates of two adjacent vertebrae to maintain them in a properly spaced apart and stable configuration, which will be resistive to normal compressive forces exerted on the spine. Large apertures (40, 56, 58) extending through the first and second segments may be packed with bone chips or marrow prior to being implanted to facilitate bond ingrowth therethrough to fuse the vertebrae together.
|
