PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize buffer requirements in a digital interface suitable for coupling a video source to a display. SOLUTION: In a packet based multimedia system 200, a multimedia source device 202 is coupled to a multimedia display device 204 by way of a bi-directional auxiliary channel 224 and a unidirectional main link 222. The bi-directional auxiliary channel is arranged to transfer information between the display device and the source device and the unidirectional main link is arranged to carry multimedia data packets from the source device to the display device. By interspersing special characters that allow the display device to distinguish each bit of pixel data included in the data packets, only the small FIFO type buffer unit is needed.
