PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external preparation for the skin enabling the antibacterial and/or antiherpes activities of undecylenic acid to be effectively exhibited, and having reduced unpleasant feeling of an user. SOLUTION: The antibacterial and/or antiherpes activities are effectively exhibited by reducing the smell peculiar to the undecylenic acid, and skin-irritating properties and improving the solubility in water, spreadable properties on the skin, and penetrability to the skin by modifying the undecylenic acid with a sugar, formulating the sugar ester of the undecylenic acid with an external preparation for the skin, and applying the resultant external preparation for the skin to the skin.
