A method and apparatus are provided for operating a motor vehicle 10 having an electric motor 14 and a hydrocarbon fueled engine 12. The method includes the steps of moving the vehicle 10 using the electric motor 14 and the engine 12 when the vehicle 10 is below a first predetermined speed wherein an instantaneous respective torque contribution of the electric motor 14 and engine 12 is based upon a detected engine load and a vehicle velocity and moving the vehicle 10 using the engine 12 alone when the vehicle 10 is above the first predetermined speed. The electric drive system 22 may be retrofitted to a vehicle having a longitudinal drive shaft. The system 22 is controlled via a set of signals obtained through an on board diagnostic connector (24 see fig 3). A controller 16 may use engine load and throttle position signals and vehicle velocity to determine electric motor torque contribution. |
