PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for controlling a variable valve mechanism comprising an actuator for driving a control shaft, capable of restraining occurrence of burn damage, and the like of the actuator. SOLUTION: The variable valve mechanism controlling device has a position with a projecting part 24a of a control shaft 24 contacting with a first stopper 10a as a minimum displacement end position. The control shaft 24 is displaced to the minimum displacement end position so that the position whereat the shaft 24 is judged to reach the minimum displacement end position is learned as a reference position. At the time of learning the reference position, the setting range of the duty ratio as a ratio of the power supply time to a brushless motor 31 is guarded in a range narrower (-40% to 100%) than a widest settable range (-100% to 100%) with respect to the duty ratio in the controlling device.
