PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved artificial intervertebral disk.

SOLUTION: The artificial intervertebral disk 10 for insertion between adjacent vertebrae includes: an upper plate 12 and a lower plate 14 having an outer surface 18 instalable in contact with each vertebra, an inner bearing face and a lateral section; a core 16 between the plates having upper and lower surfaces having a complementary shape to the inner bearing face of the plate enabling the plate to slide over the core; and formations located on at least one of the bearing faces of the plates. The formations mutually cooperate to retain the core between the plates. The formation has a rib located on at least one of the plates and a channel of the core. The rib includes the formation located in the channel for anchoring the core between the plates during sliding movement of the plates over the core.
