A data reducing method and device, the method comprising: according to characteristic information of data to be stored, determining whether a to-be-stored data block in the data to be stored requires de-duplication processing (301); if so, then conducting the de-duplication processing on the to-be-stored data block (302); and if not, then compressing the to-be-stored data block (303). The method avoids performing a fingerprint calculation and duplication checking on a data block that cannot be de-duplication processed or that has a low de-duplication rate, thus reducing consumption of CPU resource of a storage server or a memory, and addressing the problem of wasting CPU resource of the storage server or the memory. |
