PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a line head simplified in data transfer to light emitting elements, and also to provide an image forming apparatus using it, and a controlling method of the line head.

SOLUTION: Character strings and series of commands of print data Da are developed into gradation data Db corresponding to each pixel of the line head by a print controller 53. Light amount correction data Dd for each pixel read in advance into a head control substrate 54 from the serial EEPROM 58 of the line head 56 is encoded by an encoder 55 as data Dc combined with a gradation value, and is transferred to the line head 56. The data Dc is transferred through a group of data lines having one gradation value and light amount correction value in predetermined bits.
