PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metallic surface treating method in which a zinc phosphate film suitable to cation type electrodeposition coating for a metallic molding having metallic surfaces particularly iron and zinc surfaces or iron zinc and aluminum surfaces and also suitable to a closed system is obtained. SOLUTION: In this metallic surface treating method, in a which chemical conversion treatment is performed by immersing treatment using an acidic aqueous solution of zinc phosphate, an aqueous solution of zinc nitrite containing, as a accelerator, zinc nitrite of 5 to 40 wt.% and containing, by weight, sodium ions of 0 to 100 ppm and sulfuric ions of 0 to 50 ppm is used.
