PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems in a system for calculating a distance from a reflection surface of light to a sensor reading head by utilizing inverse-square attenuation of light reflected by a diffusion surface, wherein the distance from the sensor to the reflection surface is calculated following the inverse-square attenuation of light, which causes complexity of position calculation, and a signal is reduced quickly following the inverse-square coefficient while becoming susceptible to be influenced by an error. SOLUTION: In this ranging device, structuring light intensity is used in order to define a displacement measured value. A microlens array or a diffraction optical element inputs light from a light source, and outputs an intensity pattern having a flat top with a divergent light stripe. A response of the system to a position change is changed approximately in proportion to a reciprocal of the distance from the reflection surface to a divergent light stripe source by using the divergent light stripe. Sensitivity of a measurement signal on fluctuation of an optical output from a light source can be removed together with other possible fluctuations by utilizing a double detector procedure.
