A gas cylinder is provided to have a function of returning to a predetermined height automatically without the need to adjust the height of a chair directly, and to have strong durability. A gas cylinder includes a spindle(113), a cylinder(117), a piston member, a valve member(150), an ascending member, first and second return members and an erosion preventing portion. The spindle does a vertical reciprocating motion according to the adjustment of the height. The cylinder is mounted inside the spindle and gas is filled into the cylinder. The piston member divides the inside of the cylinder vertically. The ascending member is installed on the piston member or the valve member, and makes the spindle return to its original position automatically when the load given to the spindle is removed.
