The metric values represent aggregated attributes such as checksums, MIN and/or MAX aggregates, sameness bits, bloom filter aggregates, queryable user tags, moving average aggregates, b-tree aggregates, etc.

A method for maintaining metrics in a hierarchical structure comprised of nodes including a root node, each node having attributes, the method comprising: for each of a plurality of changes affecting at least one leaf node of the hierarchical structure, for each non-leaf node on a direct path from the non-leaf node that contains the at least one leaf node to the root node, for each of one or more metrics, each metric reflecting an aggregation of at least one of the attributes, determining whether the metric is to be updated as a result of the change,in response to determining that the metric is to be updated as a result of the change, updating a value for the metric to reflect the change based at least in part on a value for the metric stored for at least one child of the non-leaf node.
