<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal recording material with such advantages as small particle diameter of a color producing substance and a developer, high surface strength (binder strength) and surface whiteness, and excellent light resistance/water resistance. <P>SOLUTION: This thermal recording material has a thermal color producing layer formed on a support, using a heat sensitizer coating liquid composed of the color producing substance, the developer, a dispersion binder and a crosslinking agent. The dispersion binder is a vinyl alcohol resin which is composed of a saponification product, of a copolymer of a fatty vinyl ester and a (meth)allylsulfonic acid or its salts, which has no 4-sulfophenyl group but a carbonyl group having a reactivity with a hydrazino group in a molecule.
