A reciprocating compressor is provided to partially flow a refrigerant incoming through a suction port into a space between a partitioning plate and the inner sidewall of a housing to directly cool an inverter to thereby efficiently cool the inverter. A reciprocating compressor includes a housing(10,10'), a compression device(16), a motor(27), and an inverter(32). The housing forms the exterior and shape of the reciprocating compressor. The housing includes a compression chamber(15), a motor chamber(25), and an inverter chamber(29) which are connected. The compression device is located in the compression chamber and compresses a refrigerant. The motor is located in the motor chamber, connected to the compression device and provides a driving force for compressing the refrigerant. The inverter controls rotation of the motor. The inverter chamber includes a partitioning plate(30). The partitioning plate partitions the inverter chamber into an inlet unit(29a) and a cooling unit(29b). The inlet unit flows the refrigerant into the motor chamber. The cooling unit cools the inverter. The inverter is set in the cooling unit.
